As the world’s largest human rights organization, Amnesty International (AI) plays a crucial role in the articulation of human rights aspirations, principles and standards. Through the organization's global website, amnesty.org, as well as other e-communications properties, AI's Digital Communications Programme (DCP) is central to promoting AI’s message and encouraging people from around the world to take action in support of human rights. The department, based at AI's International Secretariat in London, is now seeking to bolster its technical arm and is looking to add two key members to the team.
A multi-talented Online Developer is sought to provide front-end development support for the global website within the Digital Communications Programme (DCP), as well as other digital services. Key tasks will include developing and applying HTML/CSS templates, troubleshooting HTML forms, adapting or generating Javascript code, skinning and integrating “social web” applications, customising XML/XSL files for localisation, adapting Flash animations for different languages and re-using Flash components. Experience working with open source technologies, including theming, adding modules and customisation would be a distinct advantage, as would PHP skills. Note that Amnesty currently uses a Notes/Domino platform, so experience with this platform is desirable.
Overall Purpose of Job:
To provide front-end development support for its global website, www.amnesty.org. Primary Tasks:
* Assist in the development of online technology to support AI’s work – in the first instance the IS Web CMS (Drupal) – including code (PHP) and design templates (CSS) and integration.
* Customise online technology for AI’s work with regard to both design and functionality, including new bespoke technical tools, off-the-shelf or ASP-type applications, “social web” type applications, and others.
* Assist in the provision of support and training for online technology, including day-to-day user support and troubleshooting.
* Advise and assist IEP staff and other teams in the IS and the movement with regards to online development or design issues when implementing or developing content for the web.
* Help ensure that highest standards of design, functionality, accessibility and usability are maintained on amnesty.org; provide guidance on best practice to IEP staff and the movement as appropriate.
* Keep up to date with trends and developments within the online development field, primarily in the area of Web CMS, PHP, CSS, XML etc, in order to provide best practice advice.
* Participate in general IEP meetings and online technology meetings; carry out own administrative tasks related to the post in accordance with agreed guidelines on self-servicing; manage own work practices and health and safety; contribute towards the development and use of shared administrative systems, good work practices and other standards within IEP which maximise efficiency and effectiveness.
* Contribute to the overall flexibility of resource use in the team and the Program by providing cover for team members and other Program staff as agreed within the team or between Program teams; participate as necessary in cross-program or intra-program teams, project teams and matrix teams, as delegated by the Program Director in consultation with the team.
* CDEOP: All staff will work individually and collectively to promote a constructive and sensitive approach to working with others from a variety of cultures and backgrounds where the work of others is valued and respected; staff will carry out their tasks within the terms and intention of the CDEOP.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Technical skills
* Experience of working with a Web CMS (Open Source CMS desirable), including creating templates and layouts
* Experience working with OpenSource technologies, including theming, adding modules, customisation, etc.
* Experience of creating code and design templates for interactive websites, including PHP, HTML, XML/XSLT, CSS, etc.
* Experience of customising both design and functionality of installed or remotely hosted web applications, preferably within a multilingual environment
* Strong understanding of HTML, PHP, CSS, DHTML/Javascript
* Knowledge of AJAX (prototype, scriptacilous), as well as general purpose scripting language (PERL, Ruby, Python) is desirable
* Experience of using and/or creating blogs, RSS feeds, meta tags, etc.
* Experience of integrating a variety of web media into web content, including Flash and audio/video streamlining
* Awareness of, and exposure to, other online media, technologies and formats, including SMS, online radio, etc.
* Willingness to keep up-to-date with developments in relevant web technologies, undertaking training where necessary
Design skills
* Experience of designing attractive online content using the latest technologies
* Experience of manipulating images, video and audio for the web
* Proficient in the use of a variety of graphics/multimedia software, such as Photoshop, Premiere or similar
* Able to develop and set standards with reference to design, usability and accessibility, and to supervise others' adherence to them.
Communication skills
* Fluent written and oral English. Ability to read and understand some French, Spanish or Arabic is desirable
Team working and organizational skills
* Able to organize and prioritize own work effectively, working to deadlines and agreed priorities
* Able to work independently and as part of a team
* Able to contribute to the development of the Internet and E-communications Program
