Cycle to DrupalCon?

johngriffin's picture
Hi! A few people have expressed an interest in cycling to Paris for DrupalCon, I thought I would post a message here in order to put the proposition to the wider community. We're currently thinking London to Paris, which is roughly 220 miles (depending on which route) and could quite easily be achieved in three days. Departing from London on Saturday the 29th August, you could arrive in Paris on the evening of the 31st and stumble to the first day of DrupalCon the following morning. If you like the idea and may be interested then please add your mark, an issue queue style "subscribe" will do for the moment. If you have done the trip before and/or can help with information on the route then please get in touch. There's a great route planned here: http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/london-... But apparently it won't be ready until 2012, doh!

Great Idea

Wow, love the idea of this!

Not going to have time to take part, but would great to follow the Drupal UK cyclists via daily tweets and Flickr photos/videos.

Cool!

Could plot our progress live on Google maps too. I may even selo-tape my iphone to the handlebars and broadcast live video of the sussex countryside and knackered Drupalistas. Will have to turn it off before we get to France though to avoid exorbitant roaming charges!

I'm up for it!

Yes count me in John :)

Cycle to Paris, raise money for Charity

I think it's worth mentioning that we're doing this for charity, whether we choose our own charities or join together to raise a larger amount for one is something we can decide upon later... Other things to ponder: Each of us will need a "bag buddy", a trusty friend who's going via train or whatever and is willing to take a bag of clothes/laptop for us. Accommodation, bike friendly B&B? Book in advanced or on the fly, I guess depends how many there are of us! Both ways? Might be a bit much? I'm currently thinking just one way from London to Paris... I've a folding bike, but full size bikes okay on Eurostar/train/ferry on the way home?

Great idea...

What an excellent idea! I'd definitely have joined in if I still lived in London. Some friends of mine did London -> Paris recently. You can find their route and logistics here: http://sites.google.com/site/gallicshrug/ That might help get you started!

Thanks

Brilliant, thanks for that link Darren!

I'm taking my family this

I'm taking my family this time so I can't cycle with you / take your baggage. Sorry! But I might be too honest for a task like this in the first place: 'Have You Packed Your Luggage Yourself?' 'Uh, no...' 'Did anyone else pack your baggage?' 'Uh, yes...'

Luggage

Hehe, thanks Mori, but you've raised an important point, I didn't think about the baggage packing issue, I guess we'll have to let our baggage buddies take a look through our stuff so they can answer that question with a clear conscience...

No I think you can just

No I think you can just pretend the luggage to be yours, but might be pretty funny to put a big bag of chalk in the suitcase as a practical joke :D

Sounds like fun

John, genius idea. Sounds like a lot of fun and I might be up for it! Need to get a proper bike first though... only have a knackered single-speed at the moment and don't think my thighs are super-human enough to ride that to Paris... Awesome. Farez Redkey | Drupal development redkeydigital.com

Been out for my first training ride

Hey, I just got back from my first training ride, I did 7.5 miles which felt good! Hoping to build that up daily and do a longer ride at the weekends. Any other takers? Now's the time to start training if like me you're fairly unfit otherwise just turn up on the day ;)
