Drupal Drop In - February 2009, London

Date:
Fri, 06/02/2009 - 18:30 - 22:30

The first Drupal Drop In of 2009, and as usual all are welcome to join in, from Drupal guru to shiny eye'd newbie.

Our Drop In events normally take place at what was, once-upon-a-time, London's first Internet cafe, just behind Goodge street station. The venue is now called Be The Reds, and is part of a Korean chain, so there's the added bonus of a Korean basement bar and restaurant.

If you have some work to show off or tips to demo, please feel free to come along and bask in our admiration. See you there!

Sounds great

Would be happy to demo some recently launched projects built with Drupal 6 - using Views 2, Multiple Languages, Feed API Mapper etc.
Robert Castelo's picture

Yes please

Excellent, looking forward to seeing that.

The Simple Idea

We'll be happy to demo our deployment system, which enables rapid development of sites, and backup and discuss the launch of some new opportunities in the Open source space.
Robert Castelo's picture

Go for it!

Sounds interesting.
Botty's picture

Looking forward it

This will be my first Drupal meeting

I'd like to come to this as well...

Good work and thanks on organising this! I've recently posted this wanted: http://www.drupal.org.uk/wanted/paid-help-nee... Does anyone know anyone that would be interested in helping me on it? Thanks, Nick

Theming Drupal 6

I'll do a basic introduction to theming Drupal 6.

Gather yea all and hear tails of the mighty theme function preprocessor!

Drop in

I may drop in depending on whether I'm free on the night. I've built a number of sites using Acquia Drupal (6.9) recently, including http://www.phpconference.co.uk for this year's PHP UK Conference, happening at Olympia Conference Centre on Friday Feb 27th. It would be good if this event could have an event on Facebook, or meetup.com, or just some way (an .ics file to import into a calendar?) that we can be easily reminded that it's happening nearer the time.

facebook search

have you tried searching in facebook for "php conference" ? quite amusing, the results are nothing to do with it :)
natts's picture

Hmm

Yeah, that's a weird one, though if you click 'Pages' or 'Events' it comes up, or if you search for 'PHP UK Conference'.
hunthunthunt's picture

Great site...

What made you choose the Acquia release and what module did you use to build the registration/shopping cart?
natts's picture

Thanks!

http://acquia.com/products-services We used Acquia because their distribution includes a lot of great community modules (that should probably be optional parts of the standard Drupal, but for whatever reason, they aren't) that they have tested for security/bugs etc. We also got a free one-year subscription to Acquia Network as a community site (a special offer they were doing in 2008). The shopping cart is Ubercart - http://drupal.org/project/ubercart / http://www.ubercart.org The other shopping cart module out there wasn't ready for production use in Drupal 6.

Count me in

Haven´t been to a drupal meeting in like 12 months 3:00

I'll be there

Count me in!

I always see these posts sooo late, lol. I'm so happy there will be a meeting so soon, I've been waiting for this, it'll be awesome to see you guys. I have recently contributed some themes that I'd like to show people, maybe I can talk briefly about how to turn a Wordpress theme into Drupal (and how easy it is), and discuss briefly making themes from scratch (and how its not as hard as people might think). I also have a new module, if I fix most of the bugs by then, I'll give a quick demo. Cheers!
DanielJohnston@drupal.org's picture

I'll be there as well, on

I'll be there as well, on the hunt for Drupal devs and web designers who'd like big bags of cash. Plus I can share my despair at making http://indusdelta.co.uk a bit less crap. I'm about to sell a site to someone else, amusingly. I suspect I'm horribly undercharging them.

Count me in too...

I hope to attend but am unlikely to make it there before 9pm. It will be my first London Drupal dropin...
Robert Castelo's picture

After 9 p.m.

If you come ater 9 p.m. we will probably be in the basement bar restaurant.

I'll be there

Sounds good. Yeah I remember that old Internet cafe... didn't it used to be called Cyberia? What happened to it? Farez Redkey | Drupal development redkeydigital.com

17:46 Yikes! Ended up

17:46 Yikes! Ended up getting to the venue early for one reason or another and have discovered that Be The Reds is closed, lights off and notice on door! Am round the corner in a Cafe Nero. Will try and get hold of someone to let everyone know...
hunthunthunt's picture

Oh no!

Was just about to leave - will bring things to make sign to put on window - see all there soon.

Drupal meet-up Friday 6th - still on?

Hi Roberto, Is this still on tonight? About to set off. is it worth it? Riz

Gutted - Snowed In

We had 4 inches of snow here in Basingstoke today and the day has turned to sludge! Sadly, I won't be able to make it. See you at the next one!
Robert Castelo's picture

Doh!!

Luck was just not our side today, sorry this evening's Drupal Drop In was not all it could have been.

We've been using BTR for three years and this is the first time it's been booked out or that the Internet hasn't worked.

I'll look around for another venue nearby to use as a back up if this ever happens again, and build some redundancy into the event ;-)

Anyone fancy trying again on Friday 20th February?

Robert Castelo's picture

Getting better...

Actually the first London meetup we did coincided with bombings which shut down the Underground, and the infamous three day outage of drupal.org.

http://drupal.org/meeting-uk-2005

We're getting better Tongue out

Re-schedule would be great

I'm disappointed that I couldn't make last night so certainly would be up for the 20th of Feb
DanielJohnston@drupal.org's picture

venue

Quick thought - The Pembury is a bit out of the way by Hackney Downs station, but if you're really stretched, then it has lots of room, no loud music, decent food and real ales, free wifi, and a very IT-workerish clientele. The landlord Steve wrote his own POS software for the tills.

20th works for me

I'd like to find out what I missed
hunthunthunt's picture

Not as expected but fun nonetheless

Regarding alternative venues, the FLUG (Flex London Users Group) meet up at Bar Music Hall on Curtain Road, Shoreditch. A large cavernous space with wifi and big tables. Probably best on a weeknight as it gets busy on a Friday.

Next Drop In

Just scheduled the next Drop In event.
