Drupal Surrey, the way forward?

johnw's picture

Earlier this month we had our 3rd Drupal Surrey meetup at the George Abbott pub in Guildford.

Turnout for the three meetings has been 6, 6 and 3, with some faces regular and some new each time.  I've not been keeping track, but perhaps 10-12 people all told.

My feeling is that, although a beer and a chat are good ideas from time to time, to create a group that can thrive we need at least sometimes to have a venue where short presentations are possible.  C'mon guys, get a new job with a nice obliging employer who'll help with this! Smile

In the meantime, how often do people fancy meetings?  Would bi-monthly, or even quarterly, be better until such time as we can have a meeting with more content?

Hi John

I will be in the Guildford area again on Monday 1st March (going back to the same garage to sort out my car again!) and wondered if we could meet up somewhere that afternoon/evening?

I'll also be at the Silvermere Golf Club near Cobham (just up the A3 from Guildford) on 3rd and 4th March from 12:00 noon, and could meet you and/or others there beforehand if that would be of interest.

Maybe that would also be a great venue for ad-hoc Surrey meetups and they do have facilities there. Do you know the place?

In the mean time, I'll explore other options. Personally, it can be a bit of a trek for me to get to Guildford as I come form the opposite end of Surrey, so it's not very convenient. Where are the others travelling from?

Surrey

Hi Cliff, my diary's rather chaotic and fluid this week, due to a customer panic.  So I have to take a rain cheque on meeting you.. besides, you really don't want a one on one meeting with me!  I'm much too strong medicine, best taken well diluted with a good sprinkling of other attendees as well as a pint!

I don't know the golf club, but I hope you'll do a recce.  It looks very conveniently located, close to the M25 should suit car drivers from many parts of Surrey.  I doubt it's good for access via public transport though, which may be a consideration for some -- but we don't have to have every meeting at the same place, so if it has plus points it's worth a try.

Where is the "opposite end of Surrey"?  How about you locate somewhere close to you and we give that a try next time?  Since it's only you and me talking at present, let's skip having a March meeting and try to line up something for Mon eve 12th April.  That should give everyone enough warning.

Surrey Meet

Hi John

Sounds like a plan!

I'm based near Smallfield/Horley RH6.

One venue option nearer me is the Arora Hotel in Crawley, which is pleasant, has meeting rooms if needed, is relatively accessible via public transport, close to the M23 with some free on-site parking for drivers and ticks most boxes (BUT is outside surrey! and is possibly too far for some folks to travel). http://gatwick.arorahotels.com/default.aspx?pg=contactus&rp=home

I know the Silvermere Golf Club and it has much better facilities, is close to the M25 and is perhaps more convenient. http://www.silvermere-golf.co.uk/Silvermere-Surrey-Bistro-Directions.htm

However, I think the venue can be selected once we have an idea of who, how and where from etc. for the 12th April.

Over to Drupal Surrey members to declare a preference.

I have been to all 3 meetings

I have been to all 3 meetings so far, they have varied. It would be nice to get a structure in place for each meeting. Surely there are others out there interested.

Hi John,Looking forward to

Hi John,

Looking forward to the next meeting, do you think we could have a meeting late March, i'm off to Thailand on the 12th April and would like to meet up before May as i've missed the last 2 meets due to weather and not paying close attention to this thread :-)

- With regards to venue's, we have large meeting rooms at my offiices in Guildford which have internet connections and projectors if need be.

They cost a few pounds per hour to hire (less than 5 for sure) , the only downside is there is no bar!

I can make enquiries if you are interested.

Cheers

I have just checked and can

I have just checked and can confirm that a meeting room is available on a monthly basis in the Surrey research park, the room has internet and includes a projector.

Matt (we met at the  first meet - i've changed my profile to my company name)

Hi Matt, sorry, I've not been

Hi Matt, sorry, I've not been checking back here often enough.  Instead of a meeting this month that might be sparsely attended, how about going along to http://surrey.lug.org.uk/content/march-pub-meet-0 (Wed 24 March) which should be a group of techie people, some of whom are interested in Drupal?  No doubt some Drupal developers are more focussed on Mac or Windows, but that really wouldn't matter.
