Hi
Are there any:
1). Free Templates
2). Open Projects - ie. everyone sharing code/templates/modules
3). Focused groups
For Drupal in UK (Primary) Schools??
I have offered to build something for my kids' school (on condition it is open source) and as a group of parents we decided on Drupal. I am affraid I am a Drupal Newbie (I have tried Wordpress, Joomla, eZ - can't believe its that different).
Since most UK Schools probably need roughly the same thing, it would obviously make sense to share code/ideas/templates etc.
Is there anywhere that we can find existing school templates and is there anywhere we can dump any work we do in case it is of use to other schools.
Cheers
Rory

Hi Rory,
From my experience of making school websites, there are no "School" templates or modules/code etc. I have simply started with a blank theme such as Clean http://drupal.org/project/clean and then built the CSS/HTML from there.
As for modules, I presume you will want things like, an Events calendar, an Image Gallery or maybe even a small intranet for different users to log on and be able to access different types of content. All these are simply Drupal modules that need installing and configuring.
I'm not sure about focus groups however, maybe there are some set up that specialise in school websites? Never came across any before though.
If you want more details on the modules I'll be happy to list the essentials I use - and I'm sure most others will use.
Cheers. Garry.
Thanks
Thanks Garry,
We have an experience Drupal developer (another parent) coding for us, hence the choice of Drupal. I will pass on you kind offer at the next meeting.
I would also be interested on where the best place is to put the template when we are finished, so that any other primary schools can use it as the basis for a site and don't have to reinvent the wheel.
Best

Thanks robert, I will ping them - it looks interesting.

You might also want to track progress of the Eduglu drupal installation profile
Appreciate that http://drupaledu.org is US focussed, but there might be some initiatives of interest there too, I haven't really been through it.
Have fun :)
School Governors
I did some work a while ago attempting to organise school governors, meetings, events, minutes reporting etc. I keep meaning to release the forms and such like for anyone for whom they may be of use. I could fairly easily replicate all of the function through views and cck. Certainly I feel that schools paying into some kind of managed cms is a potential business, not the i really have time to dedicate to it. Are you gona repost your ideas / write up a case study for drupal.org page?
Hi Rory,I am a school
Hi Rory,
I am a school governor for my daughter's primary school and am looking into using drupal for their website as the current site is very inflexible and hard to manage. I was looking at some of the drupal distro's and think with an element of customisation something like the drupal commons distro from acquia could be tailoured to a school website.
I'll let you know my findings if the school give me the nod on this approach.

OK well I have piqued the interest of the ICT co-ordinator at the school I am governor of and she has asked me if I am aware of Drupal being used at other schools. I told her I know that it is based on various discussions and threads I have read but I do not have any specific websites I can point her to. So I plan to send her a few links and it would be good to include some links to live school websites in use in the UK powered by Drupal. Does anyone here know of any example sites I can link to.
I will also send her links to the Drupal For Education and E-Learning book as well as some discussion places like opensourceschools.org.uk and the ELMS distro for the VLE aspect of things. This is mainly to show that work with Drupal in education is ongoing and it's not just me having a brainwave etc.
She also wondered if the county council will have any guidance or opinion on use of drupal for websites - I imagine this is unlikely and they are probably going to be behind the curve on open source in schools etc but figured it may be worth asking.
If anyone can offer support / advice or links I would be very grateful as I feel I have a real chance of getting drupal into the school and making their online presence much more community focused etc.
TIA,
JamieT
Drupal in Education
There are some free/open-source templates on drupal.org(http://drupal.org/project/themes). I would recommend the marinelli theme, but there are plenty to choose from, just download a few and play about with what you want your site to look like. If you are looking to create your own theme (and you know a bit about html/css) think about creating a sub theme from Zen or something like that.
There are a few groups; http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-education
The installation profile DrupalEd seems to have been put on the back burner for a while unfortunately, :(.
Also I would consider using Drupal based CiviCRM within a school as it does enable you to manage donations/worker/volunteers which can be quite helpful to a school. I know when I was working with a school, they wanted to develop a more robust and community based solution for governers, both governer to governor communication and parent/teacher/pupil to governor communication.
I think a useful way you think about it is look at what features you require in your site; forums, user profiles, signups, e-commerce stores and build the site around that. I am in the process of creating a few idaes for install profiles (just updates to old ones really) but i will try to think on it for a while.

There's also the "Drupal for Education and E-Learning" book:
